The fundamental theme of Michal Skoda’s (*1962 in Tabor, Czech Republic; lives & works in Sobeslav) work is ‘space’. There are countless themes within the idea of space that appeal to him and influence his work. Whether it is space itself – its perception, effect, limit, or segmentation, this reading stands for both the architectural and individual aspects of space that he is surrounded by.
The focal point of his inspiration is the idea of the “town” - it’s certain affect upon him, and his consequent spatial ‘intervention’. The perception of spatial phenomena such as sound and colour is a natural human ability. These elements can be perceived simultaneously within a space. Perhaps it is then a combination of our multi-sensory perception and the countless influential matters of life (being both positive and negative) that influence our perception of the space we inhabit.
It could be said that Skoda’s work (through differing periods of its development) has undergone a transformation. The matter that he is preoccupied the most with at the moment concerns the ‘image’ and the ‘frame’. The diffusion of these phenomena - abundantly present around us in art and architecture as they are - makes for interesting alterations to the separations or delimitations within the space we inhabit.
In relation to the idea of ‘space’, he is also interested in the idea of the currency of the two-dimensional as well as the two versus the three-dimensional. He is therefore currently considering facets such as surface, segmentation, stratification, which links back to the idea of perceptual emptying, causing him to focus on the tendency for organisation and categorisation when it comes to the sensual perception of surface, colour and detail in relation to the structural whole of space.
All this is located within the projects that he is currently working on - all of which concerning the equation of viewing equaling perceiving then ‘picturing’.
Fundamentally speaking, he finds himself involved in the study of the abstract relationship (filled with communicative potential as it is,) between his work and the subjective viewer as an ‘individual’.
