When Juul van den Heuvel was selected as one of the ten artists who make a distinctive contribution to the Dutch fine arts, according to the national art critics, Ed Wingen, being her “elector”, wrote in “The Choice of Art Criticism”:
“Juul van den Heuvel portrays an intimate reality, which doesn’t expose itself immediately… it’s an image of suggestive power of a fairytale… Apparently Juul van den Heuvel paints with a magical wand.”
Observation is the basic principle of her work, but it’s an interactive process. The meaning of the image will be changed or rearranged.
A composition, made in 2001, depicts a classroom; the faces of the students are empty, but much detail has been added to their hairdo. The image is exchangeable, you can easily fill in your own classroom. Van den Heuvel uses the haircuts to describe time and memories.
Over the years hair has become a frequent theme and landscapes have arisen from “hair”. Her work is a search for quantity and density. Furthermore, there is the act of drawing, the length of the line, the gravity and depth. Creations derive from verbs like hanging and floating.
A recent research is a series of drawings, which are evolved from the sphere and the torus (doughnut-shape). The opportunity for variation is maximized and unlimited and it results in familiar archetypes.
