Degoede (1938) only became an artist at a later point in life. Before studying for three years with the famous artist Alphons Freijmuth at the AKI in Enschede in the Netherlands he was an art admirer.
Years later, he formed his artistic views and expressions by studying modern art and visiting museums and artists. He studied ethnography during an excursion to the difficult to reach Asmat people of West Papua. Degoede invited two Papuan woodcarvers to work in his Dutch studio for five weeks. He also became well-learned in bronze casting and working with ceramics.
The new configuration of artists such as Alphons Freymuth, Reinier Lucassen, Roger Raveel and others was a great source of inspiration for his artistry. Slowly he developed his own visual languagewhich resulted in a number of expositions. Degoede acquired an important collection of ethnographic articles and modern art as a source of inspiration.
Degoede can be found in his studio daily. Here, he constantly tries to give form to his artistic impulses. Degoede can be described as an accessible and down-to-earth artist. The same can be said about his work which is inspired by images of the sub-conscious and other direct sources of inspiration.
